Diaper Dermatitis: causes, symptoms, and treatments

Though common in babies and toddlers, the inflammation of the skin known as diaper dermatitis can be worrisome for parents.

Causes

Diaper dermatitis can result from many different factors, such as overhydration of the skin, prolonged contact with urine and waste, candida (yeast infection in the diaper area), or seborrhea (a red, itchy rash). Your little one may be more at risk for diaper dermatitis if they have diarrhea or frequent bowel movements if they are taking antibiotics. If you are chestfeeding your baby and you are on antibiotics, this may also increase the risk.

Symptoms

Diaper dermatitis symptoms can vary from case to case, but there are certain indicators of what type you are dealing with. Diaper dermatitis caused by prolonged contact with urine and waste is referred to as contact diaper dermatitis. The skin on baby’s bum, thighs, and belly may appear red and shiny. If the skin is a deep red colour with patches, and the folds of your baby’s thighs are affected, it may be candida diaper dermatitis. Seborrheic diaper dermatitis can cause irritated, red skin, with yellow oily patches around the diaper area.

Prevention

You can help prevent diaper dermatitis by continuing to change your little one’s diaper often and by keeping their skin dry and free of irritants. Eco Pea Co. diapers and wipes are designed for baby’s sensitive skin and avoid the use of harsh chemicals. Let your little one go diaper free when possible to allow the skin to ‘air out’ and know that there are creams and ointments for diaper dermatitis if needed, which your family doctor will be able to help with.

No one likes to see their little ones in discomfort, but know that diaper dermatitis is common and can be treated, so trust your gut and practice some patience with yourself as you navigate the treatment process.
